This is the first lesson for learning Korean. Let's start learning Korean!

1. The excellence of Hangeul(한글)

I'm a Korean who uses Hangeul(한글) everyday, I think Hangeul(한글) is the most mystique and scientific writing system in the world. Hangeul(한글) is the only writing system that known the creator, the proclamation date, and the principles of writing.

Hangeul(한글) was created by King Sejong the Great(세종대왕) in 1443, and proclaimed under the name of 'Hunminjeongeum(훈민정음)' in 1446 which means "A set of proper sounds for the education of the people."

'Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon(훈민정음 해례본)' shows exactly why King Sejong the Great(세종대왕) created Hangeul(한글) and how it was made. In October 1997, 'Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon(훈민정음 해례본)' was registered as a UNESCO Memory of the world in recognition of its value.

The reason why Korea's illiteracy rate is low(less than 1%) is because Hangeul(한글) is very easy to learn.

There will be an opportunity to explain in more detail King Sejong the Great(세종대왕) and the process in which Hangeul(한글) was created.

2. Principles of hangeul(한글)

Consonants.

Hangeul(한글) consists of consonants and vowels. The 5 basic shapes of consonants are ㄱ, ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅅ, ㅇ. We can make different shapes of consonants by adding one stroke or stacking the basic shapes of consonants.

For example, if you add one stroke on ㄱ, can make ㅋ, if you stack two ㄱ, can make ㄲ.

So if you only know the 5, you can make all the consonants. But you don't even need to remember these 5 consonants. Because they were made after the shape of vocal organs when pronounced.

'ㄱ' is modeled after the shape of tongue's root blocking the throat when pronounced. 'ㅇ' is modeled after the shape of throat.

Therefore you don't have to remember and it is very simple! easy to learn. For this reason it is possible for you to write your name in Korean within an hour.

Vowels.

You just need to know one dot and two strokes about the vowels. one dot means the sky, 'ㅡ', 'ㅣ' each means the land and the man. The sky is round, The land is straight, and the man stand on the ground.

If there is a dot above the 'ㅡ', it becomes 'ㅗ'. if it is under the 'ㅡ', it becomes 'ㅜ'.

If two dots are above the 'ㅡ', it becomes 'ㅛ'.

If you combine 'ㅗ', and 'ㅣ', can make 'ㅚ'.

you can make all the vowels with this principle.

3. The consonants and vowels of Hangeul(한글).

There are 14 consonants and 10 vowels in Hangeul(한글).

14 Consonants : ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅎ.

10 Vowels : ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ, ㅣ.

Here is the order of all the consonants and vowels.

ㄱ, ㄲ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄸ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅃ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅇ, ㅈ, ㅉ, ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅎ (19)

ㅏ, ㅐ, ㅑ, ㅒ, ㅓ, ㅔ, ㅕ, ㅖ, ㅗ, ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅚ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅟ, ㅠ, ㅡ, ㅢ, ㅣ (21)

Let's see all the consonants and vowels with videos.

4. How to make letters

One letter of Hangeul(한글) can be divided into 3 parts.

This is an absolute rule. it never changes. Here is an example.

And there are 11 consonants used only in the third position.

ㄳ, ㄵ, ㄶ, ㄺ, ㄻ, ㄼ, ㄽ, ㄾ, ㄿ, ㅀ, ㅄ

(ㄸ, ㅉ, ㅃ These three are not used in the third position.)

You don't have to remember these 11 consonants so far.

You can use 19 consonants in the first position.

21 vowels in the second position.

blank and 27 consonants in the third position.

In theory, we can make 11,172 letters. (19 consonants X 21 vowels X 28 consonants) But we don't use it all, we use about 2,000 letters.

Vowels drawn vertically such as 'ㅣ', 'ㅏ', and 'ㅓ' are always located on the right side of the first consonant.

Vowels drawn horizontally such as 'ㅡ', 'ㅜ', and 'ㅗ' are always under the first consonant.

Let's look at this word.

"음악" (it means music.)

'ㅡ' is drawn horizontally. So it is under the 'ㅇ'.

'ㅏ' is drawn vertically. So it is on the right side of 'ㅇ'.

No matter how you feel, you have to know these basic things to learn Korean.
